Whilst many people may not enjoy going to the dentist, it is recommended that we make the visit once every six months to a year to guarantee a bright and healthy smile. If that isn’t enough to convince you to book your annual check-up, we’ve put together five reasons to regularly visit the dentist.

Prevent Decay

Tooth decay can be quickly spotted by dentists, whilst it’s hard to detect by ourselves at home. Tooth decay is the breakdown of the tooth’s outer layer, and often occurs from too much sugar in our foods and drinks. Tooth decay can worsen quickly, and a quick visit to the dentist can prevent the decay build-up from damaging our teeth further. If left untreated, decay can turn into cavities, gum irritation and oral pain.

Prevent Plaque

Full of bacteria that is harmful to our teeth, plaque is a sticky residue that resides on our teeth and gum line. As plaque builds up, tartar forms, of which can discolour our teeth and make them appear more yellow. Plaque build-up is caused by irregular teeth brushing; you should always brush your teeth twice a day. Visiting a dentist regularly will ensure your teeth are professionally cleaned and left in a cleaner, healthier state.

Prevent Gum Disease

Gum disease is very common, in fact, one in every ten people in the UK have a variation of it. Dentists can easily spot the first signs of gum disease and will help you to tackle the problem and protect your teeth before it gets worse. Untreated gum disease can cause red, swollen and painful gums, often making it difficult to eat, too. You can prevent gum disease by brushing and flossing your teeth, using a mouthwash and having regular visits to a dental hygienist.

Less Costly in the Long Run

Whilst dental procedures may seem expensive at the time, ensuring you regularly attend your check-ups can help you to save money in the long run. Looking after and maintaining your smile will mean tooth decay and gum disease are less likely to progress into a condition that requires expensive (and painful) dental work. Visiting your dentist once every six months or once a year will mean you can avoid a necessary expense in the future.

Love your Smile

Whether you’re already happy with your teeth’s appearance or not, regularly visiting a dental practice can help to improve, or maintain, your smile. Dentists can offer and suggest a range of different treatments including whitening, orthodontics and bonding, all of which can help you to love your smile.
