Brushing your teeth is something everyone knows how and when to do. However, many people struggle with buying the toothpaste that is right for them. There are a few different steps you can consider when reaching for the toothpaste in your next shop.

Whitening Toothpastes

Although a whitening toothpaste may help for a brief amount of time, your teeth will never be permanently white. Some ingredients used in whitening toothpastes can also cause gum irritation or issues with sensitivity. However, it does help to stop surface stains that can cause your teeth to lose its brightness.

Sensitive Toothpastes

Sensitive teeth can be very painful and can occur whether you’re having something cold or hot. Sensitive toothpastes that contain potassium nitrate can help to block the pain travelling from the tooth to the nerve. Sensitivity occurs when the enamel over our teeth becomes too thin, so you also want a toothpaste that will help to make this stronger again. Sensitive toothpastes can really help, but it will not happen instantly, and you will need to use it proactively.

Children’s Toothpaste

If choosing a toothpaste for your child, you should opt for a fluoride toothpaste and start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as they come through. Using a fluoride toothpaste will help to prevent and control tooth decay. You do not need to buy a toothpaste aimed at children; some of them won’t have enough fluoride in them. You should choose a toothpaste that contains 1,350-1,500 ppm fluoride for children over seven.

No Extra Active Ingredients

Many people, especially if you brush your teeth twice a day, daily, will not need any specific type of toothpaste. There are many different toothpastes available that only include fluoride and no extra ingredients. Sometimes the more specific types of toothpastes can cost more, so if it isn’t needed then you won’t need to spend that extra money. Although, it never hurts to get extra protection against cavities or to reduce gum problems.
